Reconnect with Familiarity and Nostalgia

Returning to a city after a long absence can be a surreal experience, even if the surroundings were once familiar. It's fascinating to observe the subtle changes that have taken place - and sometimes, even more intriguing are the things that have remained unchanged, like the enduring somberness of the view outside the Hollands Spoor station. However, once you reach the hotel room, unpack your belongings, and step back into the outside world, a sense of familiarity is regained. After enjoying a meal in a well-known establishment, you feel as if you are almost home.

A Beloved City That Stands the Test of Time

For me, this sentiment rings especially true for the vibrant city of Den Haag. Although I only lived there for a mere twenty years and left more than half a century ago, it still holds a special place in my heart. When some individuals claim to never be able to adapt to the city, I am inclined to believe that it's more a reflection of them rather than the city itself. With this account of my recent visit to Den Haag, peppered with nostalgic detours into a more or less gray past, I have attempted to support this assertion. And really, how difficult can that be?
